This afternoon, I painted my first abstract painting. I haven't decided if it's finished yet because I don't love the way it came out. I might add a silhouette or words later. I got pretty frustrated with this one because I was trying something different when I blended colors together and I couldn't get it to work consistently. It turned out okay, but I don't think it looks quite complete.

Tonight I spent some time doing my first colored pencil sketch. I have to admit it was harder than I though it would be. A few weeks back I was sketching just for fun but I didn't use any colors. I didn't think it would be so hard to blend colored pencils into one another. I drew two toucans on top of a leafy background, so it's pretty colorful and very bright. I think it turned out really well, considering it was my first time attempting this type of sketch.
I have had some struggles with meeting Nicole. She's been really busy with projects she's been working on and personal issues. We've still only met once, which means I don't have as many hours in with her as I should. Now, with the corona virus being an issue and having no school, we aren't expected to meet with our mentors. That means that I've been doing my project on my own, but I've still been communicating with Nicole about my paintings. She's given me some tips on blending and what brushes I should be using, which will be super helpful in future paintings. She also is going to send me videos of her working to show me painting techniques that she uses, which will be really cool and hopefully I can apply them to my own paintings.
Tonight, I did another painting. This one was a sunset painting with a view of power lines and some birds in the distance. I used water to blend the sky this time so I found blending much easier. It was also more fun to paint because I had a better idea of what brushes to use and techniques for getting thin and precise lines.
Today, I started the actual product of my senior project. I painted a set of four small canvasses. I painted a scene with a tree on all of them and each was in a different season. I struggled a bit with blending the sky because on the first one I did, I used a brush that wasn't very good for blending colors in a nice gradient. I did get better as I went along though, and I think they turned out really well over all. You can view them on my "Pictures" page.
Today I picked up supplies from Hobby Lobby. Luckily, they were having a 50% off
sale in the art department. I used the suggestions Nicole gave me in our meeting and I bought sets of acrylic paints, sketching pencils, and colored pencils. I also picked up a whole bunch of canvasses and paint brushes, a sketch pad, an easel, palettes, and canvas paper to practice on or if I run out of canvasses. Because of the sale, I managed to get all of this for about $130. We had a senior project meeting on Thursday, November 7. At this meeting, we discussed meeting with our mentors. I have to make my first contact with my mentor over the phone before November 21st. In this phone call, I will finalize that person as my mentor and explain the basics of my senior project with them. I'll have to meet with them for 15 hours, either working on my final product or shadowing. At my first meeting with my mentor, I will need to bring along several forms for them to sign and further discuss my project with them. They will need to ensure that my project can be finished in the time we have to work on it.
I turned in my final research paper on October 23, 2019. I struggled finding sources, so it was hard for me to get enough information for eight pages, which was the minimum. When I went through my first rough draft with Mrs. Stekly, I had only five pages, and my original outline ended up not lining up very well with the information I was able to find. She helped me find ways to expand what I already had and branch out to find new points to discuss.
The final rough draft I turned in had nearly ten pages, the maximum. Mrs. Stekly helped me revise it and rewrite my outline. Then all I had left to do was my works cited pages, which didn't take long because my source cards were already written. I am so happy to finally be done with my research paper. I spent a lot of time finding information from my sources and writing note cards. I finished 40 note cards yesterday morning so that I could get a start on my paper. We began writing our rough drafts yesterday. I am struggling because a lot of my information doesn't exactly line up with my outline. I decided I am going to rewrite parts of my outline to better fit the information I have and to give my paper a better structure.
I struggled to find book sources for my paper and I am unsure if I will be able to use many of the ones that I ordered for information in my research paper. I had more luck finding my internet sources as I figured out that there is a substantial difference between "color psychology" and "color psychology in relation to mood". I may have to return many of the book sources that I ordered and swap them for new ones that have better information for my topic.
